Notification Variations

Updated February 6, 2026

Notification variations use the system language model in iOS to generate small wording variants for some Fuel notifications while keeping meaning and delivery logic unchanged.

What this setting changes

Fuel schedules review notifications and smart reminders ahead of time. When notification variations are enabled, Fuel can replace certain fixed notification bodies with a short rewrite that conveys the same message.

This feature does not change scheduling, triggers, thresholds, paywalls, or deep links. It only changes text.

Fuel does not send your notification text to Fuel servers for this feature. The generation is handled by iOS.

Where variations are used

Fuel only applies variations to short, fixed strings where a rewrite is low risk.

Today, that set covers a subset of review helper copy and reminder bodies such as meal, water, and streak reminders.

If a notification includes computed details such as a calorie delta, Fuel keeps that text unchanged.

Eligibility and language support

The toggle appears in App Preferences only when your device is on iOS 26 or later and your app language is supported.

Fuel currently supports variations for these languages.

Language
English
French
German
Spanish
Japanese
Korean

Even when the toggle is visible, iOS may report the system model as unavailable. Common reasons include a device that is not eligible, Apple Intelligence being disabled, or the model not being ready. Fuel will fall back to the default text in those cases.

How Fuel generates the text

Fuel asks iOS to rewrite a short piece of notification copy with strict constraints.

The rewrite must keep the same meaning, stay concise, stay in the same language as the base text, and avoid adding new claims. Fuel also rejects rewrites that are empty, unchanged, too long for the notification slot, or incompatible with placeholder formatting.

Caching behavior

Fuel caches generated variants locally for up to 30 days so it does not regenerate copy every time it schedules notifications.

This can make variations feel stable across days rather than random. Cache entries expire after a fixed retention window and are also isolated by app language and build version.

Turning it on and off

  1. Open You
  2. Open Preferences
  3. Open On-device AI
  4. Toggle Notification variations

When you change this toggle, Fuel reschedules future notifications so new wording can take effect. Notifications already delivered to your lock screen do not change.

Smart Notifications

Smart notifications in Fuel deliver reviews and reminders that react to what you have logged and when you usually log, not generic engagement prompts.

Troubleshooting

Most problems in Fuel reduce to a broken data path, a duplicated data source, or a plan limit.
