When to Trust Fuel's Dynamic Calories (and When to Use Plan Calories)

Adaptive calorie algorithms self-correct over weeks, but they have predictable failure modes. This guide shows you when the math is right even when it feels wrong, when the algorithm is genuinely confused, and how to override without breaking convergence.

Fuel drops your calorie target by 180 on a Tuesday morning. You did not change anything. The number sat at 2,150 for three weeks and now it says 1,970. Check the energy source, recent activity, and rollover before you change your plan.

Adaptive calorie algorithms use several signals to estimate your energy needs. When Fuel has recent completed Watch burn, Dynamic Calories starts there and applies your plan adjustment. Recent weigh-ins can refine the estimate. Rollover can add unused calories from yesterday when you turn it on. Read a target change in the context of those signals.

This guide shows when to use Dynamic Calories and when to switch to Plan Calories.

01How Fuel sets your Dynamic Calories

Fuel uses the median of your seven most recent completed days of resting and active energy to create a stable maintenance estimate. It uses completed days so a partial day of Watch burn does not distort your baseline. Recent weigh-ins can refine the Dynamic Calories estimate.

Fuel then applies your plan adjustment. Dynamic Calories can rise when your activity runs ahead of plan. Rollover can add unused calories from yesterday when you turn it on.

02When Fuel's target changes but the scale surprises you

Most target changes fall into a small number of clear patterns.

The scale is flat but body composition is changing

This is the most common misread. The trend line is flat for three weeks and Fuel holds your estimate steady. You feel the cut should be working faster. Your waist measurement, lift numbers, and progress photos tell a different story. This is the recomposition pattern. Fuel can assess recent Watch burn, food-log coverage, and weigh-ins, but it cannot measure body composition directly. Lower the target and you can cut into the recomp.

The signal that this is happening is multi-modal divergence. Scale flat, waist down, lifts up, photos better. When three of those four agree against the scale, hold the target. The algorithm is reading body weight correctly. Your interpretation needs the body-composition context.

The post-refeed bounce

You ran a refeed weekend at maintenance plus 500. Monday morning your weight is up 1.2 kilograms. A refeed can temporarily increase scale weight through glycogen, water, and gut content. Glycogen loading changes body water and body-composition estimates.1 Choose Plan Calories while the short-term shift settles, then return to Dynamic Calories when your routine returns.

Keep food logs and weigh-ins consistent during the refeed so you can compare the next similar change.

The training-volume change

You bumped your weekly running mileage from 30 to 50 kilometers. Two weeks later, Fuel raises your Dynamic Calories target. This can reflect higher recent Watch burn and your plan adjustment. Check Fuel's energy source before you change your plan. If recent Watch burn reflects your normal routine, let the new target run. If your Watch data is incomplete or your routine changed only briefly, choose Plan Calories until your routine returns.

The menstrual cycle artifact

For women, body weight can vary across the menstrual cycle. Watson & Robinson reported body-weight variation across the menstrual cycle (Br J Nutr. 1965;19:237-248, PMID 14290862). Smoothing behavior is product-specific, so recurring cycle-associated variation should be interpreted alongside cycle timing rather than treated as a maintenance change.

Keep standardized, frequent weigh-ins across cycles; compare phase-matched trends across cycles rather than relying on one cycle day per month.

03When to use Plan Calories

Choose Plan Calories when recent burn or weight data does not represent your normal routine. Plan Calories keeps your daily target fixed while you restore a useful data window.

Inconsistent logging bias

Fuel needs consistent food logs to assess its energy estimate. A stable logging pattern gives Fuel more useful evidence than a pattern that changes by day of the week.

If you log accurately Monday through Thursday and stop logging Friday through Sunday, Fuel cannot assess your full intake pattern. A lower target can reflect incomplete food-log coverage rather than a lower energy need.

Close the logging gap with the food database accuracy audit, then judge Dynamic Calories from a complete routine.

Major water shifts the trend cannot smooth

Creatine, sodium, carbohydrate, and medication changes may cause temporary scale changes unrelated to fat balance. These shifts can obscure the trend without representing a change in body-fat balance.

If one occurs mid-cut, choose Plan Calories, keep logging, and switch back to Dynamic Calories after the short-term shift settles.

Starting or stopping a GLP-1

GLP-1 receptor agonists can alter intake, gastric emptying, and body-weight trends, especially during treatment changes. Track intake and weight consistently, interpret short-term fluctuations cautiously, and use guidance from the prescribing clinician for medication decisions.

An adaptive algorithm may read a treatment transition as an unstable pattern. Document the change, avoid treating the transition as a stable baseline, and reassess the trend with your prescribing clinician before making medication-related decisions. Acute illness, injury, or travel disruption

Illness can lower your weight and appetite. Travel can change your sleep, training, and food environment. A return from vacation can raise the scale through sodium and travel-day eating. These changes may not reflect a real change in energy needs.

Choose Plan Calories during the disruption. Keep food logs and weigh-ins consistent. Switch back to Dynamic Calories when your usual sleep, training, and food routine return.

05What Fuel measures and what it misses

Fuel uses recent completed Watch burn, food-log coverage, and weigh-ins to assess your energy estimate. Watch Fit compares complete weeks of Watch burn, food logs, and weight trends. When those signals agree, Fuel gently calibrates the burn signal it uses for future targets.

Fuel cannot directly measure body composition, sleep quality, stress, or cycle context. Use waist circumference, strength performance, photo comparisons, and cycle tracking to add context.

Clean inputs improve the estimate. Log food consistently, keep your Watch data complete, and weigh under similar conditions.

06How Fuel improves its estimate

Fuel starts with recent completed Watch burn when that data is available. It does not use today's partial burn as your baseline. It applies your plan adjustment, then Watch Fit calibrates future targets when complete weeks of Watch burn, food logs, and weight trends agree.
